How can I stop overthinking before sleeping?

Every single night I lie in bed and my brain just won't shut up. I start thinking about work, things I said, things I need to do tomorrow, random stuff from years ago. It usually takes me 1-2 hours to fall asleep. I've tried meditation apps but they don't really help. I'm exhausted all day because of this. Anyone have something that actually works?

I struggled with this for years and here's what actually helped me (not the generic \"put your phone away\" advice):

1. The \"brain dump\" method. Keep a notebook by your bed. Before getting in, write down everything that's in your head — tasks, worries, random thoughts. Get it all out of your brain and onto paper. Your brain feels safe \"letting go\" once it knows the thoughts are captured.

2. Cognitive shuffling. This is a technique that actually works. Pick a random word (like \"pizza\") and visualize things starting with each letter: P — penguin, I — igloo, Z — zebra... It forces your brain into a random pattern that mimics the onset of sleep.

3. 4-7-8 breathing. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Do this 4 times. It physically activates your parasympathetic nervous system.

4. Stop trying to sleep. The more you try, the worse it gets. Tell yourself \"I'm just going to rest my body.\" Paradoxically, this reduces the anxiety that keeps you awake.

Give the brain dump + cognitive shuffling combo a try for 2 weeks. It changed my nights completely.
