How does my smartphone map application know my exact coordinates on Earth without having a direct cellular connection?

Your phone contains a passive GPS receiver that listens for atomic clock time-signals broadcasted by a network of satellites in orbit. By calculating the microsecond delay it takes for signals from at least four different satellites to reach your phone, it triangulates your exact position.
