How do you properly check the engine oil level in a modern vehicle using the manual dipstick method?
I want to perform basic car maintenance at home. Should I check my engine oil while the vehicle engine is running hot or after it has been resting turned off on a flat surface?

Park your car on a completely flat surface and turn off the engine for at least ten minutes to let the oil drain back down into the pan. Pull the dipstick out wipe it clean with a rag reinsert it fully then pull it out again to read the oil level between the two indicator marks.
