How does a fiber-optic cable transmit high-speed internet data across deep oceans?

Fiber-optic cables are made of ultra-pure glass threads. Digital data is converted into rapid pulses of laser light. This light travels through the glass using total internal reflection, bouncing off the internal walls without escaping, traveling near the speed of light across the seabed.
