I accidentally deleted important files from my laptop. Can I recover them?
I was cleaning up my desktop and accidentally deleted a folder with all my tax documents and family photos from the past 5 years. I emptied the recycle bin too. I'm on Windows 11. Is there any way to get these back? I'm literally panicking right now.

Take a deep breath — there's a good chance you can recover most of these. Here's what to do RIGHT NOW:
1. Stop using the laptop immediately. Every second you use it, there's a chance the deleted data gets overwritten. Don't save anything, don't install anything, don't even browse the web.
2. Try Recuva first (free). Download it on a DIFFERENT computer and put it on a USB drive. Run a deep scan. Recuva can recover files deleted from the recycle bin in many cases.
3. If Recuva doesn't work, try PhotoRec. It's free and open-source. It's less user-friendly but more powerful. It can recover photos even from formatted drives.
4. For critical files, use a paid service. If Recuva and PhotoRec fail, services like Ontrack or DriveSavers can recover data for $200-500. They have a much higher success rate.
5. Check cloud backups. Do you have OneDrive, Google Drive, or iCloud syncing your desktop? Check there — Windows 11 often has OneDrive backup enabled by default and your files might be there.
For the future: enable OneDrive or Google Drive backup on your desktop folder immediately.
