My car's check engine light came on. Should I panic?

My check engine light just turned on while I was driving. The car seems to run fine — no weird noises, no loss of power. I'm 45 minutes from home. Should I pull over immediately or can I drive home? What could this be? I can't afford a big repair right now.

Don't panic — but don't ignore it either. Here's how to handle this:

Can you drive home? If the light is steady (not flashing), the car runs normally, and there's no smoking or strange smells — yes, you can drive home. A flashing check engine light means pull over IMMEDIATELY (that's a misfire that can damage your catalytic converter).

What it probably is: The #1 cause of check engine lights is a loose gas cap. Seriously. It happens more often than you'd think. Tighten it and see if the light goes off after a few drive cycles.

Other common (cheap) causes: Oxygen sensor ($100-300), spark plugs ($100-200), or catalytic converter ($500-1500). All of these are fixable.

What to do now: Go to AutoZone or O'Reilly (free) and have them read the code. They'll tell you exactly what's wrong in 5 minutes. Then you can decide if it's urgent or can wait.

Don't: Don't keep driving for weeks hoping it'll go away. It won't, and small problems become big expensive ones.
