My dog is afraid of thunderstorms. How do I help her?

Every time there's a thunderstorm my 4-year-old Labrador shakes uncontrollably, drools everywhere, and tries to hide under the bed. It lasts for hours. I've tried comforting her but she won't eat or listen to me. I feel so bad for her. Is there anything I can give her or do to make this easier?

Thunderstorm anxiety is incredibly common in dogs and it's not something they \"grow out of.\" Here's what actually helps:

1. ThunderShirt or Anxiety Wrap. This is a snug vest that applies gentle pressure to your dog's torso — it's like a weighted blanket for dogs. It works for about 70% of dogs. Get one BEFORE the next storm, not during.

2. Create a safe space. A crate covered with a blanket in a quiet interior room (no windows). Put something that smells like you in there. The enclosed space makes most dogs feel safer.

3. White noise or calming music. Play classical music or \"Doggy Calm Music\" on YouTube. The consistent sound masks thunder.

4. Talk to your vet about medication. For severe cases, vets can prescribe Trazodone or Sileo (a gel you put in their mouth before storms). Sileo is specifically FDA-approved for storm anxiety and works within 30 minutes.

What NOT to do: Don't over-comfort her — it can reinforce the fear. Act calm and normal. Your energy affects her energy.
