My dog refuses to eat his food. Should I be worried?

My 4-year-old Golden Retriever has always been a huge food lover but for the past 2 days he won't touch his kibble. He'll eat treats but completely ignores his bowl. He's still drinking water and acting normal otherwise — playing, walking, no vomiting or diarrhea. I'm freaking out a little. How long should I wait before taking him to the vet?

I understand the panic — when your dog stops eating, it feels like an emergency. But here's the thing: if he's still drinking water, active, and not showing other symptoms, he's probably okay for now.

Dogs commonly skip meals for benign reasons: weather changes (they eat less when it's hot), boredom with the same food, or just being stubborn. Try warming up his kibble slightly (microwave for 10 seconds) to release the aroma — this often works like magic.

You can also try mixing in some boiled chicken, pumpkin puree, or a little broth to make it more appealing. Some dogs just need a food rotation every few months.

However, take him to the vet immediately if: he goes more than 48 hours without eating anything (including treats), he starts vomiting, has diarrhea, seems lethargic, or if his gums look pale. A healthy dog can actually go 3-5 days without food, but it's better not to push it.

For now, give it one more day. If he still won't eat tomorrow morning, book that vet appointment. Better safe than sorry with our fur babies!
