My laptop keeps overheating and shutting down. What's wrong?
My Dell XPS 13 is about 2 years old and lately it gets extremely hot and just shuts down randomly, especially when I have more than a few tabs open. I use it on my bed mostly. I cleaned the vents with compressed air last month but it didn't help. The fan sounds like a jet engine when it runs. Should I get it repaired or buy a new one?

Using your laptop on your bed is almost certainly the main problem. Beds, blankets, and pillows block the air vents and trap heat. That's why it's overheating even after you cleaned the vents.
Immediate fixes (try these first):
1. Use a hard, flat surface. Get a laptop cooling pad ($15-25 on Amazon) or even just use a hardcover book. This alone can drop temperatures by 10-15°F.
2. Check your power settings. Go to Windows Settings > System > Power and set it to \"Better Battery\" or \"Best Battery Life\" when you don't need performance. This reduces CPU speed and heat.
3. Limit background processes. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and see what's using CPU. Disable startup programs you don't need.
If that doesn't work: The thermal paste inside may have dried out. A repair shop can replace it for $50-80. This is very common in 2-year-old laptops.
Don't buy a new one yet. Try the cooling pad + thermal paste replacement first. If it still overheats after that, then consider upgrading.
