What are the biomechanical differences between a conventional and a sumo deadlift stance?

In powerlifting, why do some athletes pull massive weights with their feet close together, while others use an ultra-wide stance?

A conventional deadlift uses a narrow stance, placing heavy leverage and stress on the lower back and hamstrings. A sumo deadlift uses a very wide stance, creating a shorter range of motion and shifting the mechanical load heavily onto the quadriceps and hip adductors.
