What are the signs that a desktop power supply unit (PSU) is dying?

My PC randomly reboots or makes a loud clicking sound under heavy load. How do you diagnose a failing power supply before it fries components?

Look for spontaneous reboots under graphics load, coil whine noises, or unexplained screen freezes. Check software rails voltage drop using HWMonitor tool.
