What is the difference between a hurricane, a typhoon, and a cyclone?

When watching global weather reports, why do meteorologists use different terms for these massive, rotating ocean storms?

They are the exact same meteorological phenomenon. The name changes purely based on geography: 'Hurricanes' occur in the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific. 'Typhoons' occur in the Northwest Pacific. 'Cyclones' occur in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.
