What is the difference between a virus and a bacterium?

Why do doctors prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infections like strep throat, but not for viral infections like the common cold?

Bacteria are single-celled living organisms that can reproduce independently; antibiotics kill them by destroying their cell walls. Viruses are tiny genetic packages (DNA/RNA) that cannot survive without invading a host cell; antibiotics have absolutely no effect on them.
