Sweat causes the massive loss of both water and critical electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium). Drinking massive amounts of pure water dilutes the remaining electrolytes in your blood, a dangerous condition called hyponatremia. You must consume fluids mixed with heavy sodium to lock the water back into your cells.
