The Titanic's hull plates were fastened with low-grade iron rivets that became extremely brittle in freezing water. When the ship scraped the iceberg, the rivet heads popped off, allowing water to flood five watertight compartments. Furthermore, the compartment bulkheads did not reach the ceiling, allowing water to spill over.
