Why do dogs always kick their hind legs backward after defecating on grass?

Every time my dog goes to the bathroom, they scratch the ground aggressively with their back paws, throwing dirt everywhere. Is this a physical cleanup instinct or communication?

It is a vital communication behavior known as scrape marking. Dogs have specialized scent glands located between their paw pads; scratching releases pheromones into the dirt, providing a dual visual and scent boundary marker for other local canines.
