Why do domestic cats possess an intense biological urge to consume small amounts of fresh green grass blades?

My indoor cat has zero access to the wild outdoors but whenever I bring a small pot of fresh cat grass into the kitchen they devour it instantly and often vomit it up. Why do they crave grass?

Wild felines ingest green grass to act as a natural physical laxative and digestive sweep. Because cats groom themselves constantly their stomachs accumulate heavy masses of indigestible fur hairballs; grass fibers irritate the stomach lining inducing a natural regurgitation loop to clear blockages.
