Why do domestic dogs display an intense state of physical shaking or trembling when they hear thunder or fireworks bursts?
My dog hides in the bathroom and shakes like a leaf during weekend winter rainstorms. Is this response purely psychological fear or do they physically experience the sound waves?

It is a combination of acute psychological phobia and intense physical auditory overload. A canine's hearing capability is four times more sensitive than a human's allowing them to feel the low-frequency barometric air pressure drops and sonic physical vibrations produced by deep thunder long before human ears detect it.
