Why do human eyes appear bright red in photographs shot with a camera flash?

When we look at family photos taken indoors with an old camera flash, everyone looks like they have glowing red eyes. What optical reflection causes this effect?

The burst of camera flash light is so fast that human pupils don't have time to constrict. The bright light rays pass straight into the eye, reflecting off the blood-rich retina layer.
