Why do human muscles experience painful cramping during intense sports or workouts?

I was playing football and my calf muscle suddenly locked up into a severe painful ball. Is this caused by a lack of water or specific mineral depletion?

Cramps are caused by structural motor neuron hyperexcitation. While dehydration plays a role, the primary trigger is a severe depletion of localized electrolytes (sodium, magnesium, potassium) inside muscle cells.
