Why do old antique cast iron pans possess an incredibly smooth glassy cooking surface compared to modern newly manufactured iron skillets?

I bought a cheap modern cast iron pan and its surface feels rough like dark sandpaper but my grandmother's old skillet is smooth as glass. What changed in historical manufacturing foundries?

Vintage cast iron cookware was manufactured using sand-mold castings but afterward the foundry workers put every individual pan through an intensive automated mechanical stone-grinding polishing phase to smooth the raw metal. Modern manufacturers skip this expensive labor-intensive step choosing to apply chemical factory seasonings over rough raw castings.
