Why do onions make you cry when you chop them?

Slicing an onion breaks its cells, releasing an enzyme that reacts with amino acids to form a volatile sulfur gas called syn-propanethial-S-oxide. When this gas reaches the water in your eyes, it creates a mild sulfuric acid, triggering tears to flush it out.
