Why do our bones make a loud popping or cracking sound when we stretch our joints?

Every morning when I get out of bed and bend my knees or pull my fingers, I hear a clear loud cracking sound. Does this indicate early joint damage?

It is called cavitation. Your body joints contain lubricating synovial fluid; stretching drops pressure inside the joint, causing tiny dissolved gas bubbles to expand and burst rapidly.
