Why do residential hot water heaters require their internal sacrificial anode rods replaced every three to five years?
My basement water tank has been functioning perfectly for four years without maintenance. What is an anode rod and how does its active chemical degradation prevent my steel water tank from rusting through?

An anode rod is a long metal bar made of magnesium or aluminum inserted into the steel water tank. Due to electrochemical physics water minerals attack and corrode magnesium quicker than steel. The rod intentionally sacrifices itself by rusting away first protecting the main structural tank walls from developing leaks.
