Why do small backyard garden tomato plants require their lower leaf stems trimmed off as they grow tall?

Prune away all leaf branches touching the soil or located within the bottom 12 inches of the main stem. This eliminates splash paths for soil-borne fungal spores while forcing the plant to direct its cellular energy toward fruit production instead of maintaining redundant ground foliage.
