Why do some fresh eggs float in a bowl of water while others sink to the bottom?

I am baking a cake and checked my raw eggs in a bowl of cold tap water. One egg stood straight up and floated. Is it rotten or safe to ingest?

Eggshells are porous. Over time, moisture evaporates out of the egg and is replaced by ambient air, expanding the internal air cell. If an egg floats, it means it is old and should be discarded.
