Why do we have leap years?
Why do we add an extra day (February 29) to the calendar every four years, and what would happen if we stopped doing it?

Earth does not orbit the sun in exactly 365 days; it takes approximately 365.2422 days. If we didn't add a leap day every four years to account for this extra quarter-day, our calendar would eventually drift, shifting summer weather into December over centuries.
