Why does my car shake when I brake at high speeds?

My 2018 Honda Civic started shaking really badly when I brake, especially on the highway above 60 mph. It doesn't happen at low speeds. The brake pads were replaced about 6 months ago. Should I be worried? Is this an expensive fix?

You're probably dealing with warped brake rotors, and yes, this is actually pretty common. When you brake hard or frequently, especially in stop-and-go traffic, the rotors can overheat and warp slightly. At low speeds, you don't notice it, but at highway speeds the wobble becomes very obvious.

The good news is this is usually an easy and affordable fix. A mechanic can either resurface the rotors (which removes a thin layer of metal to make them flat again) or replace them entirely. Resurfacing typically costs $30-50 per rotor, while replacements run $150-300 per axle.

I'd also check if your brake pads were installed properly. Sometimes uneven pad deposits can cause similar issues. Make sure you're using quality pads, not the cheapest ones.

Don't ignore this though. Warped rotors cause uneven braking, which means your stopping distance increases and your car can pull to one side when braking. That's a real safety issue. Get it checked within the next week or two, and you should be fine. It's not a terrifying repair bill at all.
