Why does my cat keep scratching the furniture? How do I stop it?
I got a 2-year-old cat 6 months ago and she's destroyed 2 couches already. I bought a scratching post but she completely ignores it. She only goes for the corners of the sofa. I've tried spraying water on her when she does it but she just waits until I'm not looking. I love her but I can't keep replacing furniture. Help!

Cats scratch for three reasons: to stretch, to mark territory, and to sharpen claws. Your furniture is winning because it's more satisfying than the scratching post. Here's how to flip that:
1. The right scratching post matters. Most store-bought posts are too short or wobbly. Cats prefer tall, stable posts (at least 32 inches) wrapped in sisal rope. Place it RIGHT next to the furniture she's currently scratching — not across the room.
2. Make the furniture unappealing. Cover the corners she targets with double-sided tape or aluminum foil. Cats hate the texture. You can also use a product called \"Sticky Paws\" — it's a safe, non-toxic adhesive strip.
3. Reward the good behavior. When she uses the scratching post, give her a treat and praise immediately. Positive reinforcement works way better than punishment.
4. Trim her nails. Get nail caps (Soft Paws) from your vet — they're little vinyl caps that make scratching harmless. Game changer.
5. Don't yell or spray water. This creates fear, not learning. She's not being \"bad\" — she's being a cat. Redirect, don't punish.
