Why does the human brain experience a severe caffeine crash four to six hours after drinking a hot cup of coffee?

I feel an amazing burst of mental focus and energy right after my morning coffee but by afternoon I feel hit by an overwhelming wave of exhaustion. What chemical receptor logic explains this drop?

Throughout the day your brain accumulates a sleep-inducing chemical compound called adenosine which binds to receptors making you tired. Caffeine temporarily blocks these receptors without stopping adenosine production. Once the caffeine breaks down a massive backlog of accumulated adenosine floods your receptors causing an immediate energy crash.
